In recent years, the adoption of freeze-drying technology has been expanding in Southeast Asia in response to growing demand for improved food quality preservation and longer shelf life. During freeze-drying, water in the food is removed by sublimation under low-temperature, low-pressure conditions. Therefore, ensuring stable pumping performance in the medium-vacuum range is critical to product quality and production efficiency.

Particularly in food processing facilities with large processing capacities, the following issues become important design considerations:

  • Reduction of pump-down time
  • Capability to handle fluctuations in water vapor load generated during sublimation
  • High reliability for long continuous operation

In this project, our company supplied a Roots vacuum pump RD2500 (pumping speed: 2,500 m³/h) and an oscillating piston-type oil-sealed rotary vacuum pump P450 (pumping speed: 450 m³/h) as the main components responsible for the vacuum creation at the freeze-drying equipment used by Nam Phuong Food, a comprehensive food processing manufacturer in Vietnam.

The vacuum pumping system was designed by AN TAI LOC TRADE AND SERVICES, a Vietnam-based vacuum engineering company. The system features a booster configuration in which the Roots vacuum pump serves as the main pump and the oil rotary vacuum pump functions as the backing pump. The installation of equipment and piping was executed by a contractor of Nam Phuong Food.

Additionally, a backup pump is installed in parallel to minimize the impact on product quality during the freeze-drying process in case of any issues.

By combining a Roots vacuum pump with an oil rotary vacuum pump, the system achieves a high pumping speed and stable evacuation performance in the medium vacuum range. This improves processing capacity and operational stability required for freeze-drying processes.

RD2500 evacuates gas using a pair of synchronously rotating two-lobed rotors. P450 features twin oscillating pistons arranged 180-degree opposite phase, allowing for reduced vibration during operation. Additionally, the robust structure of the oscillating piston mechanism, along with the oil lubrication system and a large-capacity separated oil tank, allows stable operation even in applications involving water vapor loads, such as in freeze-drying processes.

[Our Approach]

The requirements for vacuum environments can vary significantly depending on the industrial field. Osaka Vacuum offers a wide range of vacuum pumps and vacuum components that can cover applications from high vacuum to low vacuum. In addition to supplying individual pumps and components, we also provide system solutions, including vacuum pumping units, vacuum pump sets, and vacuum equipment.

In this project, we demonstrate our ability to support pump selection and booster configuration design tailored to specific applications. We also offer proposals for integrated vacuum pumping units; please feel free to contact us for further information.
